Early Life and Education
Vashtie Kola is an American creative professional known for her work as an artist, filmmaker, video director, designer, disc jockey, and creative consultant. She was born on April 23, 1981, in Albany, New York. Of Afro-Trinidadian and Indo-Trinidadian descent, Kola was raised in a family that faced financial hardship during her formative years.
In 1990, at the age of nine, she moved to New York City. Pursuing her passion for the arts, she enrolled at the School of Visual Arts, where she studied film. She graduated in 2004, after five years of academic engagement and creative development.
Career in Film and Music
In 2005, Kola was signed by Box Fresh Pictures as a director, working alongside established creatives such as Anthony Mandler. During her time at the company, she directed several music videos for artists including J-Status, Tony Hussle, and Beans. She also wrote treatments for other video concepts, notably contributing to the visual planning for the music video "Testify."
Creative Leadership at Island Def Jam
In 2006, Kola was brought on as Director of Creative Services at Island Def Jam. In this role, she was responsible for maintaining brand cohesion and keeping the label aligned with emerging trends in mainstream pop culture. Her influence played a part in revitalizing the label’s creative outreach during a transformative period in the industry.
1992 Party and Cultural Impact
Together with a friend, Kola launched a nostalgic themed party called “1992,” celebrating music from the 1980s and 1990s. The event quickly gained attention in New York City nightlife and attracted numerous celebrities, including Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Jermaine Dupri, and Patrick Ewing. The party received media acclaim, with The New York Times providing coverage of its cultural relevance—though the article erroneously referred to it as "1912" in a later misprint.
Modeling and Designing Efforts
Beyond her entertainment career, Kola has also made a name in fashion as a model and designer. In 2005, she collaborated with Billionaire Boys Club, designing for the brand and later modeling for their campaigns. Her dual contribution showcased her versatility and growing presence in the fashion world.
