Zac Posen, an American fashion designer, was born on October 24, 1980. He was raised in a Jewish family in New York City, residing in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. His mother, Susan Posen, is a corporate lawyer, while his father, Stephen Posen, is an artist. From an early age, Zac displayed a passion for fashion design. As a child, he would creatively use his grandparents' synagogue yarmulkes to craft dresses for his dolls.
He attended Saint Ann’s School, a private school in Brooklyn known for its focus on the arts. During his sophomore year, he interned with designer Nicole Miller. At age sixteen, he enrolled in a pre-college program at Parsons The New School for Design. Following high school, he was mentored by Richard Martin, then curator at the Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Posen later studied womenswear at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
In 2001, while still a student, Posen created a dress made of thin leather strips and dressmaker hooks and eyes. This innovative design was showcased at London's Victoria and Albert Museum in the “Curvaceous” exhibition, earning him critical acclaim.
Posen's career breakthrough came in 2000, when supermodel Naomi Campbell wore one of his designs. The dress caught widespread attention in the fashion industry, making its way through several key figures, including actress Paz de la Huerta. He soon became well connected within fashion circles, including meeting prominent publicist Ed Filipowski through editor Ingrid Sischy.
