Cecily Strong, born in 1984, is an American comedian, actress, and voice artist known for her work on television and stage. She was born in Springfield, Illinois, and raised in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago. Her parents are Penelope Strong and Bill Strong. Her father, Bill, served as an Associated Press bureau chief and later went on to manage a public relations firm in Chicago. Her parents eventually divorced. Cecily grew up with a younger brother.
Strong developed an early interest in comedy, often reenacting sketches from Saturday Night Live (SNL) with friends. She has cited Phil Hartman as a major influence on her passion for performance. Cecily began her education at Oak Park and River Forest High School before transferring for her senior year to the Chicago Academy for the Arts, where she graduated in 2002.
Following high school, she attended the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. There, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater in 2006. After graduation, she returned to Chicago to study improv at both the Second City Conservatory and iO Chicago (formerly ImprovOlympic).
While in Chicago, Strong performed regularly with iO Chicago and The Second City, two of the city’s premier comedy institutions. She also participated in renowned comedy festivals including the Chicago Sketch Fest, New York Sketchfest, the Chicago Just for Laughs Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Her stage credits include performances at local venues such as the Mercury Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and the Goodman Theater. Additionally, she was a member of the all-female improv group Virgin Daiquiri.
