Born on September 19, 1962, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Cheryl Ann Oteri—professionally known as Cheri Oteri—spent much of her childhood in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. She is one of four siblings, with a sister named Denise Oteri and two brothers, Brian Oteri and Tommy Oteri Jr. Cheri attended Archbishop Prendergast High School. Her aunt, Barbara Pietsch, is a well-known production designer. In 2008, her father, Gaetano Thomas Oteri, tragically passed away.
While attending high school, Oteri developed an interest in music. At 25, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the music industry. Taking this advice, she joined The Groundlings, a well-regarded improv and sketch comedy troupe based in Los Angeles.
During a performance with The Groundlings, Oteri caught the attention of Lorne Michaels, producer of the long-running comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). After auditioning in New York, she joined the SNL cast in 1995. She quickly became known for her high-energy characters and celebrity impressions.
Among her standout roles were Arianna, an enthusiastic cheerleader, and Rita DelVecchio, a loud neighbor inspired by her grandmother. She also portrayed Cass Van Rye, the co-host of the spoof talk show "Morning Latte." Oteri's celebrity impressions included Amy Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Barbara Walters, Mariah Carey, Yoko Ono, and Paula Jones. She remained on the show until 2000.
