Colt McCoy, an American football quarterback, was born in 1986 in Hobbs, New Mexico. He is the eldest of three children born to Brad McCoy and Debra Kay. McCoy attended Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas, where his father served as the head football coach.
During his high school career, McCoy earned recognition as a two-time Associated Press 2A Offensive MVP and was named a First-Team All-State selection. As a sophomore, he briefly played free safety but suffered a concussion during a tackle against Bangs High School's 215-pound running back, Jacoby Jones. Following that injury, his father decided not to let him play defense again. His high school accomplishments laid the groundwork for his future in college football.
McCoy attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he played under head coach Mack Brown for the Texas Longhorns football team. After redshirting his freshman year in 2005, he became the starting quarterback in 2006 and remained in that role through the 2009 season.
In 2006, McCoy threw his 27th touchdown pass against Oklahoma State, setting a then-school record for the most touchdown passes in a single season by a Longhorns quarterback.
