Ed Speleers, born John Edward Speleers, is a British actor and producer best known for his work in both film and television. He was born at St Richard’s Hospital in West Sussex, England. When he was three years old, his parents divorced. His mother, Gill, lives in Spain, while his father, John, a financial consultant, resides in London. He has two half-brothers.
Speleers attended Eastbourne College, where he nurtured his passion for acting. During his time there, he played a key role in school productions, including performances in classics such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan, Richard III, Hamlet, and A Streetcar Named Desire. Alongside his friend Rob Curran, he co-wrote a school play titled Retribution, which addressed sensitive topics including child abuse. He also starred in the short film Metropolis, directed by Charlie Bleakley.
Speleers gained widespread attention in 2006 with his feature film debut in the title role of Eragon, a fantasy adventure produced by 20th Century Fox. Although the film received mixed reviews, it marked Speleers as a young talent to watch and opened doors to future acting opportunities.
In 2008, he starred as Jimmy Penwarden in the British television drama Echo Beach. Speleers went on to deliver a notable performance in the 2011 British thriller A Lonely Place to Die, directed by Julian Gilbey. The film starred Melissa George, Sean Harris, and Eamonn Walker, and was well received within the independent film circuit.
He continued to diversify his roles, appearing in the 2012 comedy-horror film Love Bite alongside Jessica Szohr and Timothy Spall. In 2013, he portrayed Sam in the action thriller Plastic, directed and co-written by Julian Gilbey. The film was shot in various international locations including Brunei, Miami, and the UK.
