George Robert Stephanopoulos is a former Democratic aide and television personality in the United States. Stephanopoulos is presently a co-anchor on Good Morning America alongside Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan and This Week's host. He is most famous for helping Bill Clinton win the 1992 Presidential Election.
George Robert Stephanopoulos was born on February 10, 1961, in Fall River, Massachusetts. He is the son of Nickolitsa "Nikki" Gloria and Robert George Stephanopoulos, both of Greek descent; his father served as a Greek Orthodox priest and dean emeritus of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York City. His mother was also closely involved with the church and served as the director of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America National News Service. Stephanopoulos became a follower of the Greek Orthodox faith in his youth and even considered entering the priesthood.
As he got older, Stephanopoulos lived in Purchase, New York, before moving again to Cleveland, Ohio, where he attended Orange High School in Pepper Pike. During his high school years, Stephanopoulos competed in wrestling. He would attend Columbia University in New York, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science. During his tenure at Columbia University, Stephanopoulos was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. He earned a Harry S. Truman Scholarship and was a sports broadcaster for the university's radio station WKCR-FM.
Stephanopoulos pursued a job in Washington, D.C. as an aide to Democratic Congressman Ed Feighan of Ohio before eventually leaving America to attend Balliol College at the University of Oxford in England. He would study as a Rhodes Scholar and graduated in 1984 with a master's degree in Theology. Stephanopoulos once said he spent much of his time trying to find the roots of politics while attending Oxford, which led him to more profound philosophies.
In 2001, Stephanopoulos married Alexandra Wentworth, an actress, comedian, and writer. The pair held their wedding ceremony at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity on New York's Upper East Side. Stephanopoulos went on to have two daughters with Wentworth, Elliott Anastasia Stephanopoulos and Harper Andrea Stephanopoulos.
George Stephanopoulos' passion for politics ultimately led him to pursue a profession in politics. He would help Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential battle earning him the title of one of Clinton's most trusted counsel after the race. Once Clinton was elected, Stephanopoulos was appointed press secretary before moving on to Senior Advisor on Policy and Strategy. During Clinton's presidency, Stephanopoulos served as a senior advisor to the Clinton administration.
Stephanopoulos' time as press secretary under the Clinton administration was short-lived, and he was immediately supplanted as press secretary after misspeaking during a few question and answer sessions. He was treated harshly by the media, who condemned his work as a press secretary. Things went from bad to worse for Stephanopoulos after receiving a phone call that examined the Resolution Trust Corporation's decision of legal counselors to head the Madison Guaranty examination, also known as the Whitewater scandal. After the embarrassment, Stephanopoulos surrendered to his opponent in 1996.

After his work for the Clintons, Stephanopoulos took a job as host of ABC's TV show "This Week" in September 2002. The show's success would eventually prompt ABC News to name him "Chief Washington Correspondent officially." After several years with ABC, Stephanopoulos co-moderated the 2008 U.S. presidential debate, which took place on April 16, 2008. His co-moderator was Charles Gibson. The debate would be the twenty-first and final Democratic Party presidential debate between Illinois Senator Barack Obama and New York Senator Hillary Clinton for the 2008 election cycle.
In 2009, Stephanopoulos was offered Diane Sawyer's job on "Good Morning America" by ABC News president David Westin. He accepted the position and began co-anchoring the show on December 14, 2009. His time as co-anchor of "Good Morning America" would be short-lived, and on January 10, 2010, he announced that it would be his last broadcast. Christiane Amanpour replaced him, but the show's ratings slowly declined. In December 2011, he announced he would return as host of "This Week."
After Diane Sawyer departed from World News in August of 2014, Stephanopoulos took over as Chief Anchor at ABC News while retaining his positions on "Good Morning America" and "This Week."
Along with several other notable Greek Americans, Stephanopoulos founded the Next Generation Initiative, a leadership program that seeks to get students involved in their local communities and politics. One of the more exciting aspects of Stephanopoulos is his introduction to transcendental meditation by Jerry Seinfeld. During an interview on "Good Morning America," he said, "We're all here because we all have something in common—we all practice Transcendental Meditation. I think that people don't understand exactly what it is and what a difference it has made in people's lives."
Stephanopoulos also enjoyed a brief career in entertainment television. He appeared as himself in the first season of the hit TV series "Friends" in the episode titled "The One with George Stephanopoulos." He also voiced himself in the hit animated TV series American Dad! in the episode titled "Iced, Iced Babies." Stephanopoulos has made numerous other television appearances throughout the years, including "Pawn Stars," "Popular," and "House of Cards," where he also appeared as himself.
Things took a wrong turn for Stephanopoulos in 1995 when pulling out of a parking space in front of a restaurant in Georgetown neighborhood, Washington, D.C. He collided with a parked vehicle, but instead of leaving his information or seeking out the owner of the damaged vehicle, Stephanopoulos fled the scene. The decision led to his arrest, and the court charged him with leaving the scene of an accident. He was also cited for driving with an expired license and license plates, but the charges were ultimately dismissed.
