Mendes appeared in several music videos throughout her career, including Will Smith’s “Miami,” the Pet Shop Boys’ “Se a vida é (That’s the Way Life Is)” in 1996, Aerosmith’s “Hole in My Soul” in 1997, and The Strokes’ 2004 video for “The End Has No End.”
She was signed as a global ambassador for Revlon Cosmetics and participated in their campaign to raise funds for breast cancer research. Mendes also modeled for Calvin Klein's Secret Obsession perfume campaign, which featured a nude advertisement that was banned in the United States. From 2002 to 2010, Mendes was in a relationship with producer George Augusto. In 2011, she began dating her co-star from The Place Beyond the Pines, Ryan Gosling, who is now her husband. The couple has two daughters: Esmeralda Amada, born on September 12, 2014, and Amada Lee, born on April 29, 2016.
Mendes follows a vegetarian lifestyle for both ethical and health reasons. She also practices Transcendental Meditation to support her mental well-being.
