Pickler lived with her father until he was incarcerated, then went to live with her mother, before her grandparents won custody of her at age 12. Pickler credits her grandfather, Clyde Raymond Pickler, Sr., a former electrician, and grandmother, Faye Pickler, as significant influences in her life. She graduated from North Stanly High School in New London, North Carolina in 2004. Pickler was a cheerleader and beauty queen, and sang "On the Side of Angels" by LeAnn Rimes at her high school graduation. To pay her bills early in her career, Pickler worked as a waitress at a Sonic Drive-In. In 2005, she appeared on WSOC-TV's Gimme the Mike! Contest, where she finished in second place. Pickler began her showbiz career by participating in beauty pageants. She won the "Miss Stanly County" pageant at age 17 and then competed for Miss North Carolina 2004.

Marriage, Husband, and Kids

In 2007, Pickler was in a relationship with Jordin Tootoo, a professional hockey player for the Nashville Predators. She announced later that year that they had separated due to unresolved differences. In 2008, Pickler got engaged to Kyle Jacobs, a songwriter, after he proposed to her on the beach at sunset. They had made luxurious arrangements for their wedding, but they realized it wouldn't be right for them, so they eloped and got married on an island in the Caribbean instead.

Career and Net Worth

Kellie Pickler got her big break when she auditioned for American Idol in the fall of 2005 in Greensboro, North Carolina. She sang Kelly Clarkson's "Since You Been Gone" and Martina McBride's "A Broken Wing," and the judges liked her enough to send her to Hollywood. Pickler advanced through the semi-final rounds in February and ended up reaching the Top 12. Simon Cowell predicted she would be in the final three and said he preferred her over the previous season's winner, Carrie Underwood. Recognized for her "quirky" personality and Southern charm, Pickler gained attention on the show by mispronouncing words and saying that she had hardly ever performed before real audiences. Pickler finished sixth place in the fifth season of American Idol and found her voice as a country singer during the competition.
