Eric Johnson

Johnson is best known for his skill with the electric guitar, but this multi-talented musician is also very proficient in acoustic, lap steel, resonator and bass guitar. He is an accomplished vocalist and pianist too. Skilled in an array of musical genres, he has incorporated different styles in his live performances and in his studio work too. The different styles are rock, jazz, electric and acoustic blues, soul music, classical, folk, New Age and country and western. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, B.B. King, Prince and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan have praised him for his unique playing style, diversity and technical proficiency. Johnson works slow and labors over each album of his. He wants every note, every tone to be perfect.

Johnson loves playing Fender Stratocasters and Gibson ES-335 electric guitars. In his setup he includes a triple amp with Fender, Dumble, and Marshall amplifiers. He also used other guitars’ brands like Robin, Rickenbacker, Jackson, and Charvel. He had many models built to his specifications being sold in the mass market. One of the most recognizable model is the “Eric Johnson Signature MC-40” being built by C. F. Martin & Company in 2003. In 2005 Fender released an “Eric Johnson Signature Fender Stratocaster”, also built following his specifications, followed in 2009 by a Stratocaster Rosewood model.

Johnson uses effect pedals like the “Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face”, “BK Butler Tube Driver”, “MXR KD IV Stereo Chorus”, “Vox CryBaby wah-wah”, ”ToadWorks Barracuda flanger”,  “Prescription Electronics Experience octave fuzz”, “Xotic AC Booster”, “MXR Flanger/Doubler”, “Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man delay”, “Boss Corporation DD-2 Digital Delay”, “MXR 1500 Digital Delay”, “Line 6 Echo Pro Studio Modeler”, and up to two “Maestro Echoplex” tape delays. All of these pedals are connected to multiple A/B boxes in order to create sounds and tones that are both clean and distorted.

Despite having become so popular, Johnson succeeded in keeping his personal life very private.  Although there is not much news of Johnson’s private life, he did have a girlfriend Anne in 1996 and another girlfriend Erin who presented him a cake on his 57th birthday onstage in Charlotte in 2011. She describes him as a humble guy. Was the much talented musician and guitarist Eric Johnson married, divorced? There is no news, gossip or rumors.
