After his work for the Clintons, Stephanopoulos took a job as host of ABC's TV show "This Week" in September 2002. The show's success would eventually prompt ABC News to name him "Chief Washington Correspondent officially." After several years with ABC, Stephanopoulos co-moderated the 2008 U.S. presidential debate, which took place on April 16, 2008. His co-moderator was Charles Gibson. The debate would be the twenty-first and final Democratic Party presidential debate between Illinois Senator Barack Obama and New York Senator Hillary Clinton for the 2008 election cycle.
In 2009, Stephanopoulos was offered Diane Sawyer's job on "Good Morning America" by ABC News president David Westin. He accepted the position and began co-anchoring the show on December 14, 2009. His time as co-anchor of "Good Morning America" would be short-lived, and on January 10, 2010, he announced that it would be his last broadcast. Christiane Amanpour replaced him, but the show's ratings slowly declined. In December 2011, he announced he would return as host of "This Week."
After Diane Sawyer departed from World News in August of 2014, Stephanopoulos took over as Chief Anchor at ABC News while retaining his positions on "Good Morning America" and "This Week."
Along with several other notable Greek Americans, Stephanopoulos founded the Next Generation Initiative, a leadership program that seeks to get students involved in their local communities and politics. One of the more exciting aspects of Stephanopoulos is his introduction to transcendental meditation by Jerry Seinfeld. During an interview on "Good Morning America," he said, "We're all here because we all have something in common—we all practice Transcendental Meditation. I think that people don't understand exactly what it is and what a difference it has made in people's lives."
Stephanopoulos also enjoyed a brief career in entertainment television. He appeared as himself in the first season of the hit TV series "Friends" in the episode titled "The One with George Stephanopoulos." He also voiced himself in the hit animated TV series American Dad! in the episode titled "Iced, Iced Babies." Stephanopoulos has made numerous other television appearances throughout the years, including "Pawn Stars," "Popular," and "House of Cards," where he also appeared as himself.
Things took a wrong turn for Stephanopoulos in 1995 when pulling out of a parking space in front of a restaurant in Georgetown neighborhood, Washington, D.C. He collided with a parked vehicle, but instead of leaving his information or seeking out the owner of the damaged vehicle, Stephanopoulos fled the scene. The decision led to his arrest, and the court charged him with leaving the scene of an accident. He was also cited for driving with an expired license and license plates, but the charges were ultimately dismissed.
