They reconciled and began talking again when she saw him at a show where he was discussing about pancreatic cancer that he was suffering. He died within a week after seeing him and when she gave birth to her child with her second husband, she called him Michael.

In 2016, Melissa Gilbert ran for U.S. Congress as a Democrat in Michigan's 8th congressional district and she was the presumptive Democratic nominee. Unfortunately, she had to drop out of the race in May 2016, before the primary, because of some serious injuries she suffered years earlier that had recently become a problem.
